Clinical Assessment

Effective treatment begins with a thorough understanding of the problem.  The initial evaluation can consist of taking the clinical history, reviewing records, consulting other professionals, and administering questionnaires or other psychological tests to identify the issues and establish a baseline.  We'll review this information with you so that we can collaborate on developing a treatment plan.

Psychologists have extensive post-graduate training and experience, and are legally empowered to diagnose your impairment.

Psychoeducational Assessment

When your child is struggling in school, you need a careful, thorough, and professional assessment and diagnosis.  A typical psychoeducational assessment consists of:
  • Taking a developmental history
  • Reviewing the school records
  • Consultation with teachers
  • Consultation with physicians and other professionals involved in your child's care
  • Behavioural observation
  • Administration of standardized cognitive and achievement tests
  • Development of detailed recommendations tailored to the child's needs and learning style
  • Feedback to parents and teachers

Psychotherapy

We use an integrative approach to psychological treatment.  This model incorporates each client’s unique characteristics and preferences, our clinical expertise and our experience, as well as the best available evidence from scientific research (American Psychological Association, 2005).

Depending on each client’s needs and preferences, this integrative approach may include cognitive-behavioural therapy, positive psychology, client-centred therapy, emotion-focused therapy, mindfulness, dialectical behaviour therapy skills, schema therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic/attachment-focused therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprogramming), narrative therapy, and solution-focused therapy approaches.  We also use cutting-edge technologies such as neurofeedback and cranial electrotherapy stimulation.

Independent Psychological Evaluations

Supervision

Picture
Lawyers, insurers, and employers often seek independent evaluations to aid in ensuring access to benefits, verifying claims, or determining whether a person is right for a given job.  As independent evaluators, we remain strictly objective: Regardless of who's paying us, our client is the truth.  We bring our extensive experience with clinical work to our evaluations, and we strive to be balanced, fair, and evidence-based in our conclusions.

While our workloads prevent us from conducting many IMEs at this time ourselves, we do recommend the services of REMARK-MED  for assessments in clinical psychology, neuropsychology, psychiatric, and occupational therapy. Dr Douglas worked with them for many years, and knows them to be ethical, skilled, and committed to objectivity.

When psychologists provide supervision, they retain full legal and ethical responsibility for the management of the case.
Supervision offers a number of advantages:
  • By supervising others, psychologists are able to ensure high-quality services are offered to a larger number of people, thereby reducing wait times
  • Supervision allows us to share our knowledge and experience with more recent graduates
  • Clients who need to be seen more quickly, or who may not be able to afford the full fees, can find that our supervised associates provide a faster, cost-effective alterntative
  • The teaching can be a two-way street--the process of supervising forces us to think about how and why we do what we do, and helps to keep us up to date
Please be familiar with your insurance plan.  Not all plans will cover the services of a psychologist when those services are provided through supervision.

We have developed a guide for communicating with insurers about supervision.
