My Behaviour Matters workshops: Nurturing children’s emotional development and social skills9/5/2024
Dr Patapia Tzotzoli, Clinical Psychologist (Supervised Practice) Have you ever dreamed of a world where our children can identify and manage their emotions effectively? In this world, our children respond to challenges with resilience and form deep, meaningful relationships with others, setting the foundations for a more grounded and compassionate society. This is the vision behind our series of workshops intended for children aged 4-8, designed to equip them with tools for emotional regulation and social awareness. _________ We have all witnessed how emotions such as worry, fear, anger, and disappointment can often lead to behaviors that challenge both children and the adults in their lives. These can manifest as difficulty focusing, impatience, reluctance to share, and struggles with social interactions, among others. Such challenges not only affect the child at present but also pose potential obstacles to their future emotional and social development. But what if there was a way to equip our children with a toolkit for emotional and social fluency? To teach them not just to name their feelings but to navigate and express them in ways that build bridges rather than walls? This question lies at the heart of our workshops, which are designed not just to address immediate behavioural challenges but to lay a solid foundation for lifelong emotional health and interpersonal success. Dr. Patapia Tzotzoli, a psychologist in supervised practice in the Central Ontario Clinic, drew inspiration from her two young children, aged 3 and 6, and developed the "My Behaviour Matters" series of workshops to nurture children's emotional development and social skills, and provide caregivers with simple, practical takeaways so they can continue cultivating these skills at home. "My Behaviour Matters" consists of eight interactive workshops. The topics were chosen in response to parents’ feedback, ensuring that the content is relevant and useful. Grounded in principles of social-emotional learning (SEL), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and constructivist theory, the curriculum is designed to captivate and educate, making each session a journey of discovery. Participants will dive into the world of emotions, learning to recognize and regulate feelings like anger, fear, and worry. They'll gain practical skills for more adaptive behavioural choices - from focusing and truth-telling to empathy and cooperation. Each workshop includes mindfulness exercises to enhance attention, storytelling to explore emotional landscapes, hands-on activities to reinforce learning, a Q&A for parents, and a take-home guide for caregivers to support the child's ongoing emotional education beyond the workshop. Be part of this unique journey! Secure your place in the session(s) that best fits your family's needs and don't miss the opportunity to invest in your child's emotional well-being.
